Two months is too old...
This is something I hear often from clients and photographers alike. They believe there is only the option of the first weeks for new baby portraits, and once that's passed there's no point in bothering for a professional photoshoot.
Yes, brand new babies do tend to sleep easier, longer and deeper, but why should that stop you from having portraits?
Wakey babies do take more time to photograph, but I'm here for that and for you.
The power of patience
You wouldn't guess from this photograph, but this little miss was super alert, fighting sleep, and attuned to sense the moment you even thought about placing her down!
It took me about 3 attempts of rocking and soothing and gently transitioning to get her down and out of my arms.
I'm so used to working with babies of all ages I'm immune to crying and I have lots of tried and tested techniques for soothing whilst reading their queues...and did I mention buckets of patience and perseverance?!
Making a move
Once I'd nailed the prop shot, I wanted to get some more full body shots in my natural light set up with a little bit of a different look. I managed to scoop baby from the basket in to the next set up, but she was incredibly twitchy. I use a process of supporting baby with my hands, gently tapping and white noise to give them the sensation of being held in poses like this and usually once settled I can remove my hands...but not this time! So I enlisted her mother to hold her as I had been doing, and left her hands in shot because not only is that a true reflection of the moment, it's also a beautiful extra dimension to the image, showing the scale of how little (and content) she was in her mothers arms at two months old.
Wakey wakey
And then she was awake! Bright eyed and full of expression- which is an extra bonus to photographing slightly older babies who can actually focus on you and follow sound. I love her cute expression here- what on earth is she thinking? And her eyes just shine like diamonds. It's really important to have clear shots of young babies eyes as the colour can change so much and so quickly!
So don't worry if you think you've left it too late- I am here with the expertise to know the best way to get the most amazing portraits of your baby (and you) at any age!
